The Cultural Evolution of Alabama

Presented by Bettina Byrd-Giles, intercultural consultant and trainer with The Byrd’s Nest LLC

Alabama is perceived by the outside world as being monocultural and isolated. People are surprised to find a diverse state. The transplantation of companies like Mercedes, Honda and Hyundai have put Alabama on the map as a growing economy and cultural hub. This is not a new phenomenon, however. Alabama has different points of history where its population has grown as a result of globalization. At the turn of the century and the manufacturing boom, settlers from all over the globe came to Alabama to work. The northern part of the state enjoyed an influx of Europeans after World War II. “The Cultural Evolution of Alabama” is a presentation designed to help participants recognize globalization in Alabama. It also helps participants to differentiate between groups that have crossed cultural boundaries. The session will be interactive, including a mix of lecture and group discussion.

A lavalier microphone, LCD projector and screen are requested.
